Shale distribution effects on the joint elastic–electrical properties in reservoir sandstone

We investigated the effect of shale distribution on joint elastic wave and electrical properties shaly reservoir sandstones using a dataset laboratory measurements 75 brine-saturated (35 g/L salinity) rock samples (63 from literature, 12 newly measured samples). All data were collected ultrasonic (700 kHz) pulse-echo measurement technique for P- S-wave velocities (Vp, Vs), attenuations (Qp−1, Qs−1), four-electrode method resistivity under elevated hydrostatic confining pressures between 10 50 MPa (pore fluid pressure 5 MPa). The volumetric content was classified by comparing calculated dry P-wave modulus to modified Upper Hashin–Shtrikman bound quartz air mixtures, assuming pore-filling shale. This scheme in particular allowed us distinguish load-bearing distributions according idealized definitions, which provides new insight into behaviour sandstones. In resistivity–velocity space, increases with increasing velocity form more distinct trend steeper gradient compared those partial clean Moreover, straddles sandstone meets 100 150 apparent formation factors. resistivity–attenuation highest exist when is close frame porosity (for Qp−1 particular), at transition shales. results will inform development improved physics models aid characterization geophysical remote sensing, particularly seismic controlled source electromagnetic surveys.
